Smythe's Story

Life After graduating from Briarcliff HS in 1983, I enlisted in the Army and served as a Military Police Officer in Germany. I returned to Atlanta in 1986 and joined the GA National Guard. I studied American Studies at Oglethorpe University and joined the Chi Phi fraternity. In my sophomore year I was diagnosed and treated for testicular cancer, a life event that takes on more significance as I get older and have lost other friends to illness. After graduating I worked for IBM as a Systems/Customer Engineer and I knew every Wal*Mart in south Alabama very well. Hoping to cash in on the 1996 Olympics I bought a condo in Buckhead and attempted to rent it out. Well, that idea didn't work, however, I lived next door to the Peachtree Presybyterian Church where I met my Bride. She is a wonderful, beautiful, feisty New Yorker who doesn't take crap from anyone -- just what I needed! We married in '96 and moved to East Cobb. Ross Perot was denied access to the Presidential debates in 1996 after a 19% showing in 1992. I realized then our democracy was a fraud and that the Democrats and Republicans were self-serving special interests in their own right. I became active in organizing independents and helped build the Reform Party. I was a GA delegate to the 2000 Reform Party convention, and played a part in blocki...Expand for more
ng Pat Buchanan's illegal take-over of the Party. Over the next few years I joined several internet start-ups and acquired a nice collection of worthless stock options. I returned to IBM, and helped build (at the time) one of their most successful sales intranet sites. I worked from home for 4 years; the first 2 1/2 years were great. I learned a ton about Linux, PERL, webpage production and later how a corporation can kill a good project with "analysis paralysis". My last year there, we would have meetings to discuss the agenda for our next meeting! and more meetings. It was painful! One particular meeting was interrupted by the planes crashing into the Trade Center towers. I was deeply impacted by the killing that day and subsequent turmoil ever since. I did a lot of soul searching and decided that I had more to give to the world than I was currently doing. For many reasons, including my bout with cancer and my politics, I chose nursing as a second career. I have completed my first year of nursing school and will extern in the summer of 2005 in a Cardiac Step-Down Unit. I will finish nursing school in May 2006 and take my RN exam that summer. My bride and I have two children, two boys, 3.5 and 1 years old. They are by best accomplishment and I pray to be a good dad for my boys. Take care, Smythe
